Satyanandashram Hellas

Satyanandashram - True Bliss Ashram

The literal meaning of Satyanandashram is a place of true bliss.

What does the ashram offer?

In the ashram, one lives yoga every moment of the day. Yoga becomes a 24-hour living experience.
It becomes a lifestyle. One begins to radiate the benefits of yoga and becomes more positive, optimistic, creative and spiritual in all life’s situations. Everyone has a purpose. Life has a purpose. Time spent in an ashram helps one to explore that purpose.

Where is the ashram?

Satyanandashram is based near Athens and located at the foothills of Mt. Ymittos, just outside Paiania. It comprises a residential ashram and three Satyananda Yoga Meditation Centres, in Athens, Paiania and Thessaloniki. As one of the first of its kind in Europe, the ashram provides one with the opportunity to come for a short or longer stay and experience the benefits of a traditional yogic lifestyle first-hand, a wide variety of seminars on yoga related topics. Here, one may also undergo Sannyasa training, which incorporates an alternative lifestyle. It is the only training centre which provides training for yoga instructors in the system of Satyananda Yoga in Greece. Satyanandashram Hellas is associated with the Institute for Advanced Studies in Yogic Sciences (Bihar Yoga Bharati, BYB), in Munger, Bihar, India.
The word ashram comes from the Sanskrit root ‘shram’ which means a place of hard work on the physical, mental and emotional levels. An ashram provides opportunities to express one’s inherent creativity and to develop immunity from the negative tendencies in life. The word ‘ashram’ also comes from the Sansksrit root ‘ashaya’ which means a retreat and growth where one comes to know oneself. The Ancient Greek saying ‘Know Thyself’ refers to not only simply knowing the body, but to also knowing and realizing that Self which lies within each and every one of us. In ancient Greece, many ashrams and mystery schools existed, where the ancient Greek philosophers such as Socrates and Pythagoras imparted their knowledge. The land on which the residential ashram lies has a long history of spiritual activity. It is said to have once been a sanctuary where the esoteric Dionysian mysteries were taught and that the town of Paiania was the birthplace of the philosopher Socrates and the renowned orator Demosthenes. Towering over these ancient sanctuaries, on the summit of Mt. Ymittos, was a statue of Zeus –the father of Dionysus and the mightiest of all the Greek gods.

Greece has a great history and it has exercised the greatest influence on European culture and civilization for thousands of years. Even as the stream of knowledge flowed from Greece in historical times, in the same way let it flow now and let the message of yoga spread from Greece to the whole of Europe.

About the ashram
Satyanandasharam Hellas was inaugurated by Swami Satyananda in 1985. All the areas have been built with love, care and attention to every detail. This is the first thing one notices as they enter the large central gate of the ashram. One encounters a paradise hidden within the foothills of Mt. Ymittos. The gardens are surrounded with tall pine, eucalyptus, and olive trees, that were here when the land was first acquired. Later, a greater variety of trees were planted including mulberry, apricot, pomegranate, pear, apple and lemon trees, orange groves, plane trees, cypress trees, fig and date trees. The main area of the ashram is its lush green garden which is encircled by buildings painted in local earth-based colours, in harmony with the surrounding environment. Many are covered with pink and fuchsia bougainvillea vines and white jasmin, reminiscent of an island in the Aegean Sea. All around the buildings and gardens, one sees flowerbeds with roses blooming in many colours. This image is complemented by the peacocks which roam freely in the narrow pathways of the gardens, the pigeons, and the swallows which habitually come again and again to the ashram to build their nests at springtime after which they migrate once again, before winter returns. The ashram houses a variety of buildings including: single rooms, double rooms and dormitories to accommodate visitors, bathrooms, offices, kitchens, and indoor and outdoor areas where programs can host up to one thousand people. There is also a library which houses an array of books and articles about yoga and its philosophy, and literature-based material translated in a variety of languages.
