Women's groups

Women's groups guided by Swami Sivamurti have existed since 2006, starting with a group in Athens. Today there are 8 groups in many cities in Greece: Athens, Salonika, Volos/Larissa, Kavala, Mitilini, Kalamata and Patra.

Aims, goals and structure

The women’s groups, belonging to the Satyananda Yoga community of Greece, envisage a two fold task.

First, to discuss and formulate the contribution that we, as women, yogis and sannyasins, can make to the empowerment of women in our country. Our proposal takes into account the teachings of yoga and sannyasa, through our knowledge of dharma, yamas and niyamas.

Secondly, to study and research the contribution women have made throughout history to the betterment of life and humanity. To learn from the stories of women in both the public and historical arena, as well as the countless stories of women who have lived lives of great devotion and courage and whose bedrock of wisdom we endeavor to emulate.

We seek to teach through the example of the  lives we live as women, to support each member  of our group with bonds of sisterhood, and to
implement equality and harmony within our  communities through our awareness that unity is  best realized through an acceptance and tolerance
of diversity.

The above are extracts from: "A Vision for Greek Women Groups"

Women's groups and Satyananda Math

Satyananda Math is the charitable and philanthropic project of Satyanandasharam Hellas. It was founded by Swami Sivamurti in 1991 in honor of her Guru Swami Satyananda. It aims to uplift those in need. The activities of Satyananda Math have been diverse and extensive over the last year!

The women’s groups of Greece play a significant role in supporting the aims and objectives of Satyananda Math.

The Satyananda Math representatives for each group are:

  • Κavala: Sannyasin Atmabhavani
  • Volos: Jignasu Aishwarya
  • Athens: Swami Bhaktiratna
  • Salonika: Sannyasin Ananda Dhara
  • Mytilini: Siddhi
  • Patra: Sannyasin Gauri
  • Kalamata: Chandra

All Satyananda Math representatives are requested to give feedback to Swami Savikalpananda every two months regarding their group’s activities.

Project for India
An unexpected project for Satyananda Math arose, just before the ashram group were leaving for India in December 2012. They were asked to bring 100 pairs of woolly and very warm socks to Munger.
Time was short, with less than a week before the group was leaving for India. However Satyananda Math moved very quickly through the collaboration with different people to achieve their goal. Thankfully with the cooperation and assistance of everyone involved, we managed it!!!
We thank you for your help and your immediate response.

A few words from my own personal experience (Sn. Durgashakti):

«We would like to thank all of you who responded immediately with love, and who  made it possible to purchase a hundred pairs of woollen socks, which were sent to Munger with the group which departed for India on 10/12/12.

The time that we had to select, order, purchase, pack, and distribute the best quality socks, was very little time indeed! And yet, everything flowed so smoothly.

Collaboration, enthusiasm, willingness to participate, and above all care was shown by all and made this feat possible. The values of reliability, creativity, adaptability and tenacity are characteristics of the large family of Satyananda Yoga.

Warm thanks,

We wish you optimism, strength, health, and most of all love.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.»
